UK Calls for Reopening of Strait of Hormuz Amid Global Cost Surge
Speaking during a United Nations Security Council debate on maritime security, UK Minister of State for Europe, North America and Overseas Territories Stephen Doughty said the situation is extending far beyond shipping alone.
“We must get the strait reopened fully and unconditionally. Freedom of navigation must be restored in line with international law,” he said.
According to reports, Doughty stressed that the impact of the crisis is being felt across global energy markets and supply networks, contributing to wider economic instability.
“We must get the strait reopened fully and unconditionally. Freedom of navigation must be restored in line with international law,” he said.
He also issued a warning about Iran’s role in the ongoing tensions, arguing that no state should be able to exert leverage over global trade routes in a way that disrupts the world economy.
Doughty said Iran “must not be able to hold the global economy hostage,” and urged coordinated international efforts to protect maritime traffic and ensure safe passage through the waterway.
The comments come amid continued tensions between Iran and the United States over the strategic shipping lane, which carries around one-fifth of global oil and gas flows. The disruption has already contributed to rising fuel and food prices worldwide.
Doughty added that the UK will continue working with international partners to secure key maritime routes, emphasizing collective responsibility in maintaining stability.
“Global stability and security depend on us stepping up together,” he said.
